Bishop Mar Martin Severius

Bishop Mar Martin Severius (PhD, Hon. D.D., M.Div., B.A. (Th.), C.J., V.O.S.C.) is a dedicated bishop and pastoral leader, currently serving within the Anglican Independent Communion Australia (AICA). Born in 1956, he was raised in a military family, with his father’s 20-year service in the U.S. Air Force influencing his early faith journey. Inspired by his devout parents and military chaplains, he discerned his call to the priesthood from a young age.

Bishop Severius studied theology at the University of Notre Dame, where he was ordained a priest in 1982. His early ministry included various pastoral roles in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana, where he served as associate pastor, advocate for the Diocesan Tribunal, and founding dean of the Southern Deanery. After a period away from active ministry, he later joined independent Catholic jurisdictions, and in 2001, was consecrated a bishop in the Old Catholic Orthodox Church.

Throughout his career, Bishop Severius has been committed to both ecclesiastical and social service. He has held numerous roles, including hospice chaplain, mental health therapist, and community leader, demonstrating his deep care for both spiritual and emotional well-being.

Since moving to Australia in 2010, he has been active in pastoral support and leadership within the AICA. Alongside his ministry, he works in various professional capacities, balancing his episcopal duties with a “tent-making” approach. His ministry is a partnership with his wife, Pamela Munroe Bright, a deaconess, as they work together to serve and lead in the vineyard of the Lord.
